Apocalypse is the only one I've ever been interested in. I have UFO Defense but suffering through turn-based combat (Fallout Tactics had the right idea: Real-time combat with no movement AP but AP's for shooting) bores me to tears.

I've had this sucker 10 years and for the first two weeks it's fun, but then you run out of money and the stingy government assholes never give you enough. Meanwhile the difficulty curve for intercepts is ridiculous. Week 1: Unarmed Probes Week 2: Transports with occasional laser-beam wielding escort. Week 3: Assault Ships and fucking murderous laser beam of death armed mid-tier ships! It's as if the game expects me to have researched disruptor beams and built X-COM craft by the middle of week 3.

Seriously, how am I supposed to fend off the mid-tier UFO's when my weekly budget can barely afford me a single Hawk Air Warrior? There's raiding Sirius Cult buildings for Psyclone, which amounts to on average 10,000$ per round, assuming you have zero casualties (the cultists are armed more heavily than Branch Davidians!), and of course there's building your own industry of selling laser death rays on the open market, but by week 3 I'm just beginning my production. However raiding cultists too much can find you facing aliens (and cultists) armed with shields and teleporters and vortex mines by week 4.

What am I missing here?

Going from memory here, but I played the shit out this game back in the day.

1) Don't buy Valkyries or Hawks. Get lots of the hover cars and equip them with two of the long range missile launchers. If I remember correctly, you can buy around 6 or 7 of the hover cars for the price of a Valk and 10+ for the price of a Hawk. Set them to high altitude to minimize the chance that the missiles will hit buildings and have them engage at max range. A lot of the smaller and medium size UFOs will crumple under the first barrage and even the big ones will fall to this eventually. Really, you shouldn't use the Valk or Hawk and go directly from hovercars to your own manufactured craft. (You should keep the initial Valk because it has enough cargo space for troops, corpses, and equipment storage.) You can even park them in random garages all over the city so you can easily have a couple cars near whatever portal the UFOs emerge from.

2) Sounds like you're already raiding Sirius but keep it up. You should raid them incessantly so you have plenty of cash on hand for bribes, which is critical in case a gamestopping corp (like the delivery guys) gets pissed and decides to withhold services from you.

3) Use lots of stun gas grenades so you can recover equipment and to limit building damage during investigations.
