I mean, when you compare even a "bad" theatrical release to all the direct-to-video, made-for-TV, ancient drive-in, student-project, silent movies out there - basically all the movies that you will never see, and that mainstream critics will certainly never review - there is no way you can justify giving the latest Pirates of the Caribbean less than 3.5 stars, probably more.
Rule of thumb: if it has reasonably photogenic people speaking a language that's technically English without using too much racism, that's worth two stars right there. For a movie to deserve anywhere close to one star it would pretty much have to fail to even run in 90% of DVD players (or come on a VHS tape that unspools in your VCR, necessitating a service call*).
*Just kidding. What kind of casual movie fan doesn't build and re-build his own VCR on a regular basis? It's just the cost of admission to appreciating film, fucking deal with it noob. |
