Caltrops - Minecraft - Most hilariously terrifying thing ever

My friend and I built this thing:

That's from a much older version of the game, but it's precisely the model we used*. Ours is entirely underground, 7 spawn floors above a bottom killing floor, accessible from a nearby shaft. Doop dee doop, we finished the top 7 floors and as we made our way out, we took up the torches and dug up the temporary stairs. The bottom floor had the lava set up but not the water yet so we started on that when OMG MONSTERS WERE FALLING ALL AROUND US. Whoops! Miraculously, I didn't die and my friend died only once, sacrificing himself heroically to plug the ceiling. In the mean time 4 creepers had kerploded and there was a fair amount of rebuilding to do on that floor. No lava was displaced thankfully. While we finished up, we could see (by virtue of f3 vision, which shows you your position and the "names", even through walls, of all nearby mobs. Names = randomly generated ids) that there were 38 +/- 2 monsters growling and squeaking and moaning above us. Unplugging the holes again was the scariest thing I've had to do in that game.

*this guy built right on 0,0 and from y=128 to y=0 (the full range). Ours is not at 0,0 and goes from y = 44 to y= 10, roughly. Above ground is water, so no mobs spawn there and there didn't appear to be nearby caverns, which was lucky.
