Forum Overview :: FarCry 2

Far Cry 2 does a good job of selling the fantasy of jungle warfare. There were certainly things I liked about it: the sunsets, the water, the destructible foliage withering under automatic fire, the effects of a flamethrower on a water buffalo, the way the AI made use of technicals and indirect fire. The parts I would take issue with would be the commutes to and from the firefights (200km travelled @ 60% complete, according to my pause screen) and just how inconsequential individual battles felt, like I was fighting the same half-dozen guys over and over again - guys who didn't exist until I got within 400m of them, and who would be right there waiting for me after I killed them if I so much as walked 400m in any direction. Also, I thought the combat itself lacked depth; I didn't feel substantially better at it after ten hours than I did after one, I just had a more reliable arsenal. I guess if I could make one suggestion to the producers of Far Cry 3, it would be to add a second enemy type. Maybe some kind of officer class I could prioritize in combat? I'm imagining mixed forces of foreign mercenaries and indigenous thugs (maybe even child soldiers?), where taking out the former would send the latter into disarray. Failing that, they could at least give certain enemies a unique appearance and better stats. As it is, killing enemies in this game feels too much like crushing ants (and not in a good, Earth Defense Force way).
