Fallout 2 abandoned the original's non-linear structure in favour of making you jump through the typical series of video game hoops, starting with a mandatory tutorial in the Temple of Trials and finishing with an unavoidable boss fight on the Oil Rig.
Bullshit. My first stop was always to Navarro to get a suit of power armor for free after bullshitting the guards. After that I usually ran to New Reno to generally be an asshole.
It also gave up any sense of urgency - the world is supposedly in imminent peril, but nothing ever happens until you trigger it.
I don't get your fetish for countdowns. The main thing I remember about Nights into Dreams for the Saturn was that there was an awesome 3D world beautifull rendered out there for me to explore every nook and cranny of, but MOTHERFUCKER THAT CLOCK KEEPS FOLLOWING ME GOD OK FINE I'LL PLAY THE SHITTY 2&1/2 SCROLLER. By your logic, Fable 3 was a great game. If you're going to create an in-depth world with a devotion to detail not usually seen by people who don't code for Dwarf Fortress, don't attach a time limit onto it.
