half minute hero super mega neo climax for xblaby sdroa jists 08/06/2011, 12:22am PDT
at once it is both a great parody and a perfectly crafted and streamlined old style 8 bit era jrpg
the game comes with 2 graphics styles, 8 bit nes and 16 bit snes, altho it's clearly a much higher res than the snes is usually capable of
the game actually contains clever and cute humor, mocking the old school jrpgs, but the most outright hilarious parts of the game are when you hit start to skip a cutscene, and it blows through 3 minutes of text screens and shit in half a second. this is particularly funny when you complete a quest, which treats you to an entire old style jrpg end of game cutscene, complete with credits sequence, which you can again obliterate by hitting the start button and then holding A over the credits so you can immediately start the next quest.
the gameplay is literally summed up as "create a hero, fight monsters, gear up, level up, level up, and defeat the evil lord, all in 30 seconds." the full game is actually a little more deep than that sounds, but the key thing is that all the typical jrpg bullshit is stripped out, leaving core gameplay. each battle is over in about 2 to 3 seconds, where your hero just runs at a pack of enemies, numbers fly around, and you move on. this actually leaves a lot more time for strategizing, the real gameplay involves movement and exploration of the (small) maps, dungeons amount to nothing more than one screen on a linear path where you run at an objective, clear any enemies, collect an item, and move on. it's deceptively simple and yet extremely rewarding.
