Lap 1: As soon as I start rolling, the game starts struggling to keep up. I lose pedestrians, decorative foliage, and - most significantly - on-track hazards like dumpsters and concrete dividers. The latter wouldn't be so bad if they didn't still have the ability to stop my car dead in its tracks - sending Niko flying through the windscreen - a full second or more before they become visible.
Lap 2: Traffic thins out, to the point where I'm driving entire blocks without seeing another car. Textures start disappearing in earnest, leaving the road and surrounding buildings a solid, creamy beige.
Lap 3: Geometry starts to go. Entire buildings wink in and out of existence. My car no longer follows elevation changes in the road, remaining at "sea level" even when that entails driving straight through hills as if they were some kind of mirage. My odds of winning at this point would be pretty slim, if I got the impression my competitors still existed in any meaningful sense.
I don't get it. What about this is supposed to be fun? As far as I'm concerned it's pushing the boundaries of what could even be considered "playable". This is the sort of experience I'd expect from PC shovelware, not the highest-rated Xbox game of all time. What happened to all the reviewers who complained about the camera occasionally passing through walls in God Hand? Those guys should've had a field day with this one! |
