Short version: play the demo, be introduced to the Commando mechanic, buy game.

Cold War adds some frills to the first game's formula of "tower defense, where you man turrets for bonuses." Vehicles are much stronger, but have a battery meter that runs out damn fast. Find batteries on the map or park on the recharge mat to refill it. Turrets have interesting secondary abilities (MG3 has grenades, antitank1 and 3 get a useful fly-by-wire, AA has missile lock-ons, etc) and bonuses as you combo: a 20x combo gives you upgraded damage and no reloads until you break the chain, a 40x combo gives you a Barrage. Barrages are powerful but random strikes such as calling in an AC-130 or a nuclear strike or motherfucking RAMBO, who you then man in classic 3rd person FPS style as you move down wave after wave of VC. On one map you get to be Maverick and napalm Red October.

PROS:
  • Rambo is in this game and you play as Rambo and he yells Rambo things with terrible voice acting as you bazooka Hinds.
  • Fun 80s setting with lots of Red Dawn, Rambo, and Top Gun references and musical inspirations.
  • More variety in gameplay modes; some so-so minigame challenges, a mode where your turrets have no AI, a mode where your turrets are only AI, three different survival modes.

    CONS:
  • It's half a fucking game. 10 SP maps, 3 MP maps. Have fun buying the Soviet campaign for another $15!

Verdict: Positive, provided you like the demo and don't mind being gouged.
