SVU was always the dumbest L&O, and for some reason also the highest-rated. by Jerry Whorebach 09/04/2011, 2:02pm PDT As everyone knows, there are exactly two sides to every hot-button issue. SVU communicates this by making sure at least one member of the main cast is on each of them. Since the writing on SVU is generally pretty terrible, the situations contrived and the politics one-sided, this means one character always has to act like a blind idiot. Sometimes they make a pretty good stab at rationalizing it - Elliot has kids and a temper, so of course he'd be in favour of beating a confession out of the poor immigrant handyman, even though something about the hyper-religious parents' story doesn't add up - but other times they don't even do that much. The ultimate goal of any given episode of SVU is to get two attractive cops/DAs disagreeing so passionately, it looks like they're about to tear each other's clothes off and start going at it right there on the squadroom floor. That's called "drama" - like in Streetcar! PS: I think I remember the episode you're talking about. The nice sensitive supportive guy was still a rapist, even if he wasn't as bad a rapist as the rich frat boy jock or whatever (BOO! DOWN WITH THAT SORT OF PERSON).
