From Dust by jeep 09/05/2011, 5:29pm PDT From Dust itself wasn't the greatest thing ever, but I don't want to knock a game I enjoyed playing. I didn't play the original Populous until maybe 10 years after it had been out, and it seems to me that it more hinted at a genre than defined or even invented it, and that the guy most famous for that genre hasn't actually ever made a really great game within the confines of it. Maybe those confines are too narrow, maybe he just sucks at making games. Maybe a lot of people see a couple of cool ideas waiting to be more than a Protean blob af awkward play control and call it 'good' because they're fuckwits. I'm waiting for it to be more than that, and it seems to me From Dust is a (tiny) step in the right direction: it has a little story as to why you, a disembodied force who can manipulate any element, would give a shit about a tribe of people that you can't micromanage into starting wars with other tribes. The manipulation is pretty fluid, and the interaction between those elements are just complex enough to let you take the starting rube goldberg contraption maps and make them into any number of other kinds that avoid killing your people. So I went in expecting Black and White and got something a little better, I figure it's worth $20 but not the uverse login. I already get enough spam from the Fallen Earth people, the Impulse people, the Star Trek Online people, the GOG people, and I still haven't figured out which of these assholes signed me up for Facebook so that's also kind of at the front of my mind everytime I have to register for some shit these days. I didn't need to add more to that list, especially not Ubisoft who have aspired to be Europe's EA-class shitbirds for as long as I can remember.
