I'm playing WoW right now* and the one thing, the one thing that gets up my nose is how it has been analyzed into its component atoms. useful, I suppose, when you need a tip on finding a quest entrance, because there's three sites with four hundred comments giving you screenshots and a diagram, but not so useful when you want to experience a glimmer of wonder or discovery. there is A Right Way to do things and you don't find it, you learn it through detailed study. everyone should have X optimal gear and Y optimal skills to produce Z output. ugh!
I rebel against this both in my character and because I know it will kill the game for me. I will never be a progressive raider but I will
- explore maps for the joy of it
- keep the best item models, of all levels, purely for aesthetic enjoyment
- on my hunter, tame only the animals that I genuinely like
- fuck around with professions gamely
- acquire horsies. all horsies.
notwithstanding that last point, in general I am not a collector, I am a curator. games are geared to OCD hoarders and the kind of people who play Magic decks 100x and keep a spreadsheet of how they performed, I guess. but if you can find your own game inside a game, it can be fun again.
* because: it is The One MMO. I have decided if you feel like burning some casual leisure time on an MMO, why not choose the one whose experience, appearance, and QoL has been burnished to a high shine by the passage of millions of players? it has been a perfectly cromulent way to spend time with family and friends with basically zero technical or interface hiccups. |
