The first "real" (i.e. unhumourous) comics I ever read were Marvels, cover-dated August and September 1989 (a Larry Hama/M.D. Bright G.I. Joe and a David Michelinie/Todd MacFarlane Amazing Spider-Man, respectively). However, I spent enough time trawling back issue bins over the subsequent five or six years (before I either gave up on comics or grew out of them, depending on your point of view) that I'm still probably more conversant with eighties Marvel than any other era in human history.
These days, if I'm going to read a comic, it'll usually either be a graphic novel by one of those British guys who were always showing up on Prisoners of Gravity (like "intense beardo" or "leather jacket man") or an Essential Marvel. The latter are a Godsend if you care more about the stories than the containers they come in; the next best thing to digital, if digital was any fucking good. |
