Most keyboards have similar layouts although many variations exist. Usually there's one button for each letter (holding shift allows you to toggle between lower- and upper-case versions of the same letter) and an assortment of other buttons for various computer features, numbers, arrows, and even a volume knob or brightness adjuster. People use computer keyboards to type things on the internet or in a word processor or other application. Some people even play games with them, usually by using WASD to move forward, back, and strafe right and left in first or third person games.
The precursor to the computer keyboard is a mechanical typewriter keyboard. It had fewer buttons and each button made a little ink-covered arm fly up and strike a piece of paper, leaving a letter-shaped indention with ink on it. |
