It has been almost half a century since the summer of love. 20th century America alone is filled with anti-authority counter cultures before and after the Hippies.
YET, when someone wants to de-legitimize a political argument that's left of center with an ad hominem, calling the speaker a "Hippie" is the go-to word.
You never hear someone say, they're Bohemians or Beats or Punks or Hip-Hoppers etc. (Well, maybe punks since that word was already negative to begin with, but nowhere near the extent that Hippie is leaned on).
What did the Hippies do that made them such a lighning rod for political backlash decades after their movement ended? |
