it feels like they ran out of ideas after the Dead City.

They ran out of ideas before that when someone wrote "FALLOUT 3 + BORDERLANDS - RPG" on a whiteboard and the meeting was adjourned to start development.

I liked the game at first, the combat was fun and satisfying, but they went nowhere with it. The enemy AI is better than just about every other FPS, but that's all the game has to offer. There's basically 2 types of AI that are supposed to carry the entire game. Mutants and humans. The thugs in the very first level and the post-apocalyptic Mexicans at the end are just mutants with different models, and the authority enemies are just regular humans with better armor and sometimes a shield. The most memorable part of the game was the giant boss monster in Dead City, and that was the only time the entire game that they did anything like that. The end-game finale was just a rush of mutants for something like the tenth time in the game.

Visually the game was amazing. Doctor Kvasir's animation was mesmerizing. The levels were crammed to bursting with detail, possibly the most detailed game I've ever played. Even though the overworld is a desert canyon painted almost entirely in one of my arch nemeses, the color brown, it's so amazingly detailed complaining about it would feel a little like coming back from the Grand Canyon and complaining about how brown it was. So that's what keeping to only a few areas gets you, and replaying them would have been fine if they were interesting enough or had some kind of unique twist to warrant a second playthrough. But id's idea of a unique twist is to have you play it backwards with virtually no change (apart from different enemies, maybe.) You didn't see the back side of things because you only were facing forward the first time through, right?! It's like a whole new level now!!!!!!!! The worst fucking thing was the second half of the game where they took the amazing looking desert canyon and made everything GRAY. The whole landscape was gray. The fucking sky was gray. OH MY GOD. They already set the game in a post-apocalyptic world with shanty towns, desert wasteland, and crumbling buildings and mechanical sewers, and some asshole had the balls to squint his eyes, rub his chin, and ask, "are we sure it couldn't be bleaker?" So they cranked up the grayscale and made the whole thing ugly.

The dune buggy driving and combat, like everything else, was only fun at first. But it ultimately served no purpose. There is no exploration at all in the overworld, you just drive on confined narrow paths to a level transition into an FPS level. Beyond that, you fight vehicles in exactly the same way that spawned in exactly the same numbers in exactly the same locations. By the fourth time I left town I didn't care anymore and would rocket right past them, and the game was more than happy to let me. When you arrived at the level transition location the cars were programmed to turn around and drive away so you wouldn't get creamed getting out of your car.

Christ, id is irritating. It's obviously they have people that are insanely talented but they pool all of that talent to put out stuff that is technically amazing but so incredibly bland. It's like nobody there has any imagination. Or the one guy that does got to make a boss monster, and then they beat him with brooms back into his little cell until the next game. I said I'd give the game at least a 7/10, so ok, 7/10. It's not a terrible game, the gameplay is incredibly polished for what it provides (not much), but it's not really a great game either. It's definitely not worth sixty goddamn dollars. Really the best thing I can say about it is that it sets the minimum bar for what an FPS game should be, and I mean that in the nicest way. If you're making an FPS that isn't at least as good as Rage, then go ahead and cancel it.
