1. There is no more pedantic group of people on the Internet. Nobody has ever said anything on Metafilter that hasn't been "corrected" by some twat two posts later.
2. Amazingly unfunny. They love making awful jokes and then trying to "take it back" by using a really small font. In three months I never cracked a smile. I never, ever want to be in a room with these people.
3. The mods are quite terrible. They can't let people just fucking talk about things. They have an institutionalized system for deleting posts and they delete posts all the time. "Metafilter doesn't do (so and so) well." Oh. Okay. They then have the audiacity to tell the people whose posts they've deleted to "take it to Meta-discussion" or whatever it's called. You just deleted someone's posts, jessamyn. Have the self-awareness to recommend a site where they don't delete people's posts.
4. Really, the worst part of the site is how predictable the discussions become. Magic Johnson announced that he got HIV 20 years ago. I clicked on the discussion, and I *knew* that someone was going to bring up how "privileged" Magic Johnson is to have enough money to fight it. I *knew* someone was going to somehow blame him for poor people still getting AIDS. I knew that any bad business deal he'd been remotely involved in would be brought up. (I guess something happened with Rent-A-Center or whatever.) There's no real reason for any of the flaming shits to even have discussions because of how formulaic they are.
5. You have never seen a person who is more willing to take up for people that wouldn't think twice about them than a Metafilter poster. Someone was mean to an Indian 30 years ago? The Metafilter poster wants to FIGHT him.
Anyway, it was an awful three months and I should have spent the entire time lifting weights instead. I feel my life shortened by going over there. Never again. Fuck that place. I now understand why some ex-posters here thrived there.
