What kind of processor do you have? Unless you have a 64-bit processor the maximum amount of memory you can reference is 4 gigabytes. Remember, with a 32-bit processor, the maximum address it can handle is 2**32, which is 4*1024^3, or 4 gigabytes. Only a 64-bit processor can handle more than 4 gigabytes of memory.
It's some Intel I5 or I7 64 bit processor. One sec, Commander. OK. An Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU. 750 @ 2.67 GHz. I love that Intel demanded the "R" and "TM" pieces to show up when you right-click on My Computer. That really fits them.
I would think that motherboard make and model would be communicated to the operating system by now, but no.
