Gaming moment of the year: walking through a civilian area and accidentally hitting 'Q' instead of 'E' to talk.
The limited batteries for stealth takedowns seems lame at first, but at least it allows them to dispense with embarrassing FPS melee combat and you're not swinging around that stupid sword anymore.
The conversation interface should make the Mass Effect writers want to kill themselves. Like Russian Matroyshka dolls, it works on multiple nested levels. You get an at glance gist of what each choice is going to say, but as a safeguard for not unintentionally initiating an omnisexual relationship with an underaged cybernetic preying mantis it also tells you in detail what a choice will say when you mouse over it. But not exactly since the voice actor changes it up enough so you don't fall into the usual boredom trap of hearing the lines you just read spoken back to you.
I got back to base after the first field mission and figured I'd go to sleep right after I did the debriefing. I ended up losing track of time exploring, breaking into offices, hacking my coworkers' emails, and tracking down employee theft. An entire hour passed without me realizing!
Which brings me to a gripe. Here I was, as company security chief, following up on a request to track down the source in a series of drug thefts from the lab. I start with the office codes and email passwords of a couple employees and work my way from there building a list of suspects.
Suspect 1- A guy who has worked most of the nights that thefts have occurred.
Suspect 2- The other guy who sometimes works nights when thefts occur.
Suspect 3- Company lawyer who has been exchanging emails with another employee about some clandestine office snooping.
Suspect 4- Chick who has been contacting the lawyer regarding snooping.
Suspect 5- Employee who has a thing for Suspect #4 and has lab access. Could he have been coerced into stealing for her? Another email reveals that the first time they hooked up was right after he caught her opening the freezer where the drugs are kept.
Suspect 6- The company IT guy. Has been sending secret emails to Suspect #4 wanting the whole thing shut down so I can't find out. The security footage of every theft has also been altered and he's the most likely to be capable of that. More emails reveal that he wanted Suspect #4 to plant a camera inside the freezer. Does he want the thief secretly caught without you knowing, or is he covering his tracks? Was Suspect #4 caught planting the camera or stealing?
At this point the email trail provided no conclusive proof as to the killer's identity. I start retracing my steps. The stumbling blocks all converge on Suspect #5's email requiring level 3 hacking, way out of the player's league at this point in the game.
Resigning myself, I go to the Boss' office for the debriefing to advance the main plot. Immediately after there's an announcement to meet someone in my office. Turns out it's some guy I don't recognize from the emails confessing that he and another named employee are the thieves....oh.
That part about no proof after reading the emails? I lied. Right after getting off the flying car, you can duck into a vent and find a crate of drugs with a message pad where a drug addict is begging a named employee for more drugs. Apparently our brilliant drug dealing scientist has his customers contact him on email with his full real name.
So much for investigative work.
