This LA Times article isn't a new issue; in the book of The Godfather it mentions how a police officer was looking at abuse-of-office and excessive force charges including possible prosecution after he hit a suspect over the head with his flashlight so hard he broke it in half. (Actually he broke both the flashlight and the head in half!) The comment being that he was "one hard-headed negro", but his head wasn't hard enough because he died from the blow.
And this supposedly was an event happening in the 1940s (when that part of the story took place) and even at that, when The Godfather was published back around 1969, 1970 it was recognized that you could kill someone if you hit them hard enough with a flashlight (and that was back before they were solid steel like Maglites are now; then they were thin aluminum with carbon batteries). Probably equivalent to a two-pound rock, which used hard enough will do quite a bit of damage.
But you've got to be really close and willing to engage in almost hand-to-hand combat with an attacker to use a flashlight as a weapon, which might not be a good idea or might be beyond your capacity. |
