they made 2 different attempts to sell this game, everyone here already knows the most infamous one ("the game your mom will hate") but the standard horror game marketing is also a giant mistake. this really is an action game with horror elements.
yea, a lot of the startle elements don't work, mostly because they're incredibly obvious, or when they aren't obvious they're some kind of attempt to make you drop your controller or something? so when you don't drop your controller and run screaming from the room, they fail. it's fucking stupid. people who like horror movies are fucking stupid. and no, the thing is not a horror movie so it doesn't count, eat a dick.
anyway however, this game does have a few minor effective TENSION elements, the only things that actually work to make a player truly scared but also want to keep playing. the last game to do this correctly was stalker, whenever you were fighting bloodsuckers or the psychic brain burner guys. dead space 2 does apply a light coating of dread over your hilarious baby stomping simulator, but it also loads it down with shitty horror elements that are always detrimental to gameplay. it doesn't stop the game from being fun, but it almost succeeds. don't get me wrong, the atmosphere in the game is top notch (haha?) but it could have used less loud noises and monster closets |
