I don't really comment much in the "below the line" boards here but the title of this forum about not being able to afford an XBox Live Gold Membership reminded me of something.
The website TV Tropes has an article Crack is Cheaper, in which it gives an example of how some geek hobbies are, in addition to being so esoteric that it takes a long time to explain them and why the guy is interested in that, often very expensive.
My big hobby in this aspect isn't expensive, but it is so odd that most people don't even understand the concept. I happen to like collecting compilers, especially ones including source code. A compiler, in case you don't know, is a program that converts a set of instructions into code the computer can use to be programmed. Reading sources of compilers allows me to understand how other people have solved various problems in text processing. Similar to this is the code used to program text adventures, those also provide interesting ways of handling commands and such. |
