No, it's not some exploitation thing. It's just that every time some radio or TV station, or network does an article about Whitney Houston, invariably they play a clip from Whitney doing the high note "Annnnnd Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" in I Will Always Love You. Well, using part of a song requires paying royalties to the songwriter; these stations and networks have blanket licenses from all three performing rights societies, and as it turns out, Dolly Parton was the songwriter, so she gets a royalty on every one of the thousands of reports. So let's say the royalty on the use in a report is only $10, but if it's coming from 1,000 TV and radio stations, that's ten grand. For one report. |
