The range on the splash is only 185 (melee range is 125 for comparison) so unless the whole enemy team is right on top of each other you're stuck with a bunch of attack damage items where half the cost is tied up in useless regen stats. Best realistic case scenario you'll hit 2 enemies at once. It's much much better to be doing more damage to a single priority target than greater overall split damage to several others.
