it doesn't, you need moderation or you need intense self-selection: the regular posters would have to be willing to look at what the cables posted in zseni's forum and say "ironic misogyny is still misogyny." so I guess the other possibility is to have users who aren't pricks, but that's not really on the horizon here. I mean everyone kind of grew up in real life but this place lets them be internet jerks again so unless you have long-term plans for growth I don't see anything changing
I've linked naked pictures of erica campbell in here, maybe I've never been pleasant (or smarmy) enough to even qualify as an Internet Nice Guy, I've been almost as much part of the problem as anyone (except assholes posting mgtow shit to bully another poster). when it comes to internet gender shit on any site: trolling beta males have the numbers and the morale, and generally they also have the most to lose when someone moderates a forum in a moral way. it's not anonymity that protects them, btw. no democracy, consensus or anarchic process is going to lead to anything but what you got or worse. the larger internet and really the whole society is bent heavily in that direction (patriarchy or w/e you want to call it), the idea that people don't bring that with them to a web forum, or that you could resist it by just not putting any effort in is ridiculous
I hang out on other boards as well, I've seen the kind of place where everyone is treated well and people feel comfortable talking about the way you'd want from an ideal forum, but I've also seen the amount of effort it takes to maintain that, even for a big group of people who really want it, even with stakes as low as 'chatting about video games with steam br0s,' they're still paddling upriver, it's just way too much work
leaving other potential changes aside, you either moderate and pick a side or things continue the way you see them. if that sounds like a lot of thankless work, it is, so really why worry about it, put your effort into making more games or something
otoh the real problem is not enough quality front page content (ironically not the cables' fault there) to bring in a replacement population of forums denizens, and I have no idea how you'd change that because you'd still need sites linking to that content and...well that's like running a business then, isn't it? see if you had that bringing enough people posting on the forum to spare and had to work to fight spam, it would suddenly seem like less of a hassle to have that moderation, to use vbb instead of code out of a mysql book. it always seemed from here that you weren't really running this with any kind of plan and that's fine, a low-effort listening post for old friends is just fine |
