That's Not The Point Guy wrote: to the degree that a game is a software project, this is patently fucking false. it can take 6 months for a good software engineer to get up to speed on an ongoing project, and that assumes the project has good design and appropriate planning around deadline/milestone/schedule, which small game company projects rarely do. being in a situation where you need to change coders for something as critical to a turn-based game as enemy ai suggests a lack of ability on the part of the people running the project to even identify that talent in the first place, and in terms of a generic software project it's completely reasonable to start worrying about the overall result and maybe adjusting expectations of what that team will deliver. if the guy in charge had said anything other than "he already ripped out the ai and replaced it with a basic working model (so they could stay on schedule), he's going back and developing it further now" it'd be time for the investors to send someone independent in to look the project over. what the guy didn't say, and what any financial backers he might have should probably get cleared up for themselves, is whether a change means "we though we could get away with having one amazing guy doing double duty on rendering and ai and we've since decided we needed two people for those" (a positive for the team!) vs. "well the AI guy we had was a retard so we fired him and then publicly shamed him on our blog because we are petty and unprofessional" (a negative light for management) basically I guess the point of this is they shouldn't have said anything about personnel changes in public unless it was the positive one, but also that the one dumb thing is usually the tip of the iceberg for people being unprofessional in more than one context, and that makes it ok to be concerned about the game's development. it's not as bad as "oh shit someone stole my dev laptop and I haven't made a back up in four months*, and while I'm whining about how much of a fucking retard I am and I don't even want to make this fucking game anymore but please give me some alpha funding," but it's still not exactly a good way to inspire confidence. *(what's github precious?) |
