The next game I am going to do on my own is going to be a little like Wasteland. The reason being is that Brian Fargo raised over two million dollars for a game that won't have Wasteland's gameplay, but all came from people who enjoyed Wasteland's gameplay.
What do I mean by a game that takes things "Wasteland-style?"
- There is a 3D interface in the left-hand corner that shows the game map. (I know this is strictly Bard's Tale, not Wasteland. I am doing a terrible job borrowing from Wasteland.)
- That left-hand corner also shows character and enemy portraits.
- The area on the right-hand side shows your character names, and also their stats, and what weapon they are using.
- Below all this would be a text area, where I can pass messages, describe the game world and otherwise implement the "read from the novel" bits.
(Fargo seems to be doing a 3D tactical view bit for PCs in Wasteland 2, so there's no overlap there. )
The one improvement I am definitely going to make is to leverage the text game engine I am using. In Wasteland, to use a skill you have to hit something like "S" for skill, then select a character then do a Page Up or down to find the skill, and then 1-9 to use it. Instead, I want people to be able to type ">use lockpicking on door" and the game will identify the person with the best lockpick skill and use it on the door.
Changing weapons is also a pain in the ass with Wasteland, so I'd like to streamline that.
Two things I am going to do is downsample all the graphics to CGA, and to use free-for-commercial-use dupstep music as the soundtrack. (I reserve the right to contact and license musicians like FullofKittens for non-dubstep work, and also use .MOD files to save disk space.) The setting, plot, classes, graphics, characters, dialog and situations will be completely new, completely separate from the Wasteland IP and hopefully awesome.
I'd like to open the floor to ideas for missions, though, because Caltrops posters have a habit of making a one-off posts that would be hilarious to implement. So far the missions I have include helping an NPC move a pinball table and delivering loads of blood and semen from various skeezy locations to the Blood n' Cum. (Like, how GTA4 has that crime computer, where you can identify and target felons, in this game you would be able to identify and target AB- donors.)
In writing this post, I think another mission ought to be, "Identify the server for a website and delete the forum." So consider that in. But what else??
