Probably because I'm not a big fan of revenge stories, and that's pretty much the only motivation women have for doing anything except planning elaborate weddings or buying magazines with pictures of cupcakes in them (WHY DON'T YOU JUST BUY SOME CUPCAKES?). I prefer to play a character who's a little bit proactive rather than entirely reactive, which is to say, I want to start some shit just because I live for this shit. Even a really progressive and empowering female character like Jade from Beyond Good & Evil still runs an orphanage for war orphans, and everything she does in her career as a photojournalist is to protect and support those kids and maybe get them some justice (ie payback) along the way. Compare that to a totally average male protagonist like Frank from Dead Rising: he's also a photojournalist, and he heard there was some shit going down in Colorado so he had a helicopter drop him right in the middle of it, because that's his job and he's damn good at it (he's covered WARS, you know). Then he spends half the game taking upskirts of the hot girls he rescues because why not? I guess it's possible there's some expanded universe manga out there that establishes how Frank's dad was raped to death by zombies and that's why he devoted his life to blah blah blah but somehow I doubt it. You know why? Because men are BORN WARRIORS, they don't NEED to be forged in the fires of trauma before they can pick a fucking life path other than "make babies". I know Conan's parents were technically slain by James "Two Snakes" Earl Jones, but come on, what were the odds he wasn't going to grow up to be some kind of great warrior anyway? Maybe not King of Sumeria, but probably at least chieftain of his clan or whatever. Meanwhile Red Sonja was exactly one dead family away from being a full-time mommy. Unless her dad would have ended up molesting her at some point, in which case I guess she would've become a whore.
The only female protagonists I don't mind are usually either complete non-entities (like Chell from Portal) or female models clumsily grafted onto masculine identities (like the anthropomorphic collision cylinder you played in Fallout 3). Even a shitty male protagonist like Kratos is better than most females, because he's at least seeking revenge for a punishment brought on by his own hubris, and not just because the gods liked the way he moaned when they dicked him around. |
