| I mentioned it in another thread I think but I wanted to just put it on its own: this game is two years old but I hadn't played it so "new to me." It's finally patched to the point where it's not buggy at all. It is basically the same game as the old NES classic Uncharted Waters (I think I played it first on Genesis). Same reactive markets, same pirate issues, same goal: build up various ports and improve your production. The base campaign map is just the North Sea, but it's cool anyway. You just zip around fucking with price arbitrage and building production centers until you own everything. The game was designed to be an RTS but they added a clock control that lets you drop it to zero, basically it's turn-based now.
I say all this even though I am absolutely terrible at this game. I can run along for about 6-8 hours and then it all falls apart. I know I'm doing something wrong or missing a step or w/e because the economic model is stable on its own. I guess there's a part beyond my current level where you take over your hometown, start trading inland, and then start your own cities, but I'm still working out how many production buildings of each type is optimal, so I basically bankrupt myself over and over. Outside of my own rust/ineptitude at a type of game I haven't played in 15 years, the game beats the fuck out of my video card which is weird because a 560ti really should be able to handle a 2d game? I'm blaming german software "engineering". Anyway I think the shitty metacritic score is from pre-the-last-patch which brought in a lot of the finer controls so grab this and play it or go download the ROM for Uncharted Waters because that game lets you sail anywhere in the world circa 1400AD. |
