Watched The Grey just after watching the horrible War Horse.
War Horse: attempts to do WW1 without blood, plus a load of romantic BULLLLLLLLLL SHIEEEEEEEEET horse-related clichés. Don't be fooled by the overly positive reviews like I was, this movie is insultingly bad.
The Grey: a breath of fresh air. Cold, blood-stinking air. This movie kept reminding me of Bad Lieutenant, in that it was so nihilistically devoid of hope. At least Bad Lieutenant had Jesus appear in it, The Grey just had death. The Grey is like Bad Lieutenant with wolves instead of Jesus.
Love these small-ish budget movies with the balls to take chances. A couple other good examples are The Town, and the hilarious Punisher: Warzone, which sadly bombed horribly. |
