Feel free to explain the relevance of all this to my post. I'm not saying it's irrelevant, just that it could be interpreted in a number of ways.

The "war" between the parties has completely supplanted any idea of our country being ruled based on principled debate, at least for the republicans. They seek to win the war not by out-debating the democrats in the marketplace of ideas, but rather by sabotaging the democrats' ability to disseminate their ideas in the first place. Shutting down the Unions to cut off the democrats from a major source of funding and manpower, gerrymandering voting districts, Karl Rove's dream of turning America effectively into a single party state is slowly coming to fruition. The handful of republicans who lost their seats in the Wisconsin legislature are acceptable losses.

This kind of power jockeying at the expense of the nation's well-being is exactly what George Washington predicted that political parties would do, and he warned against it in his farewell address.

Oh well, no one listened to Eisenhower's warning about the Military Industrial Complex, either.
