The ending being the worst part of the game.
Yeah, I totally thought they were going for some kind of videodrome-type mind control explanation. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
The question of motives is what makes the game interesting. Pulling some mind control shit would've been a copout.
Ask yourself, why all the brutal killing?
Your character kills because he likes it. Evidence: 1) The only pressure the janitors apply to their masked murderers is to sound vaguely threatening. This is all that is required to trigger a homicidal rampage. 2) Your character keeps newspaper clippings of all his exploits. Not the actions of someone that is remorseful, rather, the actions of someone that wants to remember and relish those moments.
Now, why do YOU play the game? Personally, I had to force myself past some of the disturbing executions because the game was fun. The fact that I anticipated the twist (i.e. that the creators were just manipulating you into slaughtering people for the hell of it*) actually made the game more creepy than it otherwise would have been. The degree to which your motives and your character's motives overlap is what makes the game interesting.
* The secret ending is a pat ending for completionist achievement whores. IMHOOFC!!!
Then what about all the hallucinations? Like the talking corpses, or the time the omni-clerk tells you that everything you're seeing is an illusion? Not to mention the protagonist throwing up after killing the hobo.
I was more of the mind that the PC was doing all this violence against his will, therefore making his attacks that much more frenzied than the other masked assasins, such that he is the only one who can succeed at wiping out the mob.
Then again that photo he threw away at the end could be a sign that he avenged someone, I suppose. Probably the unseen girlfriend the omni-clerk refers to at the start of the game.
The main part that took me aback was when you kill the female assassin in the final boss fight. |
