Dead Space 3 is coming out soon, so one of the developers is over on NeoGAF trying to staple a human face over the slavering corporate abomination that is EA Visceral. Here's what he posted in a thread about hardcore modes:

I can't speak for other developers but one of my favorite games is Diablo. The first thing I wrote on Dead Space in terms of my contribution to the design had a one life mode with save destruction. I think it fits well with the survival theme, it wasn't until DS2 that we got around to it.
Dead Space was eleven hours of sub-Doom 3 dogfood, sandwiched between an unskippable thirty-minute introductory credits sequence (that was still unskippable on subsequent playthroughs - I checked) and a final boss fight that reversed your controls. If you took one look at that design and your first note was "needs a one life mode with save destruction", that would make you... jesus, that would make you exactly as stupid as a guy who made Dead Space.
I bought it, so I'm the asshole here but it was EA trying so adorably hard to make the kind of game that all the companies they swallowed up and shut down used to make. And they were all so terrible at it. I am glad you put a name to that shit.
A one-life mode for Dead Space. This just might work! If the game wasn't fucking Dead Space. Dead Space shows up with a one-life mode and I even accidentally try that shit, I'll be the first guy to get his money back through Steam.
(Also, what does "my contribution to the design" mean. He didn't have to do anything more than write "one life with save destruction" to design it, did he. Game designers: our best and brightest.) |
