Stern Pinball mentions on their website about the offering of their latest pinball machine - a Marvel Comics-licensed game called Avengers Pro - sells for $5699. Presuming this is purchased for an arcade or commercial installation and not for a private buyer who just has the kind of money that they can afford to put a pinball machine in their home, which means if customers are paying 50c per game, that you need 11,398 plays on the machine to break even. Now this doesn't include the electricity for it running all day and most of the nights, the sales tax (presuming you paid it which most businesses do; call it 7% or another $798), so the question is how often does a pinball machine get played these days with video games and with all the games which are available to play at home, to me, I don't really see how any place can make a profit on a pinball game. You'd need about 20 plays a day to get it to pay for itself in two years. I don't know if a pinball machine can get that much usage in this day and age, at least in the U.S.
In other countries where they don't have a lot of games targeted for their languages, where there is less Internet penetration, and even if the price to play a game is less, it's probably easier to justify buying one of these for a site in a foreign country in Europe or Asia - or possibly even in relatively affluent parts of Africa - than for North America. |
