A sheriff in Kentucky - who, surprisingly enough, supports his constituents having their own guns in their homes - was asked at a public meeting of some kind that was uploaded to YouTube whether it's right for individuals to have high powered ordnance, like, hand grenades. His answer was perfect: If it was necessary for home defense to have hand grenades, that's not a problem.

Regarding the cache of weapons in Southern California:

Written on the rifle's handle (pictured below) was the word "vengeance." Authorities said that the rifle on display belonged to Dorner.

If I were that Kentucky sheriff's opponent next election, I know the angle my attack ads would take!

And your attack ads would backfire. In rural areas, people respect and like guns, and the police there generally go along with the sentiment. When it takes 20-45 minutes for a cop driving code 3 at top speed to get to you if you call in a burglar or intruder, you had damn well better have guns on hand or the only thing the cops can do is to call the coroner for your corpse. You start raising an anti-gun campaign in remote areas in the west or rural parts, and not only will you lose against the gun promoting sheriff, the locals might run you out of the county.

Here's an example of an excellent police encounter. The guy was walking around in public, carrying a gun that looks like a full-auto, in a place that allows open carry of rifles and such. The police got complaints, so a patrol car went to investigate. The police officer told the guy to stand still and took his weapon. He needed to check that either the weapon was a full auto and the tax stamp was affixed, or that it was semi auto. Determining the weapon was semi auto, no crime or violation of law had been committed so he returned the man's weapon to him. He didn't even ask the guy for ID. He even pointed out that the police teach proper weapon use and even allow people to train on full-auto weapons.

The guy who did this video was a kook. Yes, it is legal in that state to open carry a full-auto weapon, the police officer has probable cause to inspect the weapon since from a distance it looks like a full auto, and to have a full auto requires a federal tax stamp. It's not much difference from seeing someone driving a vehicle with no front license plate and then turning on lights and siren, and once pulling over the vehicle, determining it is from a single-plate state, letting the driver go.
