I've tried a few times but the awkwardness of the interface and graphics get to me. I've been thinking about giving it another shot since SS2 was re-released though.

You wax so poetic about upgrades
Hold up there, you're arguing against things I haven't said. Again. Where have I waxed poetic about the upgrades in SS2? Most of the upgrade "fun" in SS2 is derived from RPG style stacking of modifiers and adding +1 to your stats i.e. the usual RPG optimization puzzle.
However, a lot of the psi powers are pretty cool and/or forward thinking for the time, like the mark/teleport abilities, invisibility, psionic landmines, force grab (well, item grabbing), stuff like that.
, but in System Shock 1, your cybernetic upgrades were things like shield projectors, Jet boots, etc. and any gun you came across you could use!
OK, jet boots seem pretty cool, let's see what else we got based on this Gamefaqs list of upgrades...
Biological Sys. Monitor v1 - L1 (north edge)
v2 - LR (south by Radiation Treatment station)
Sensaround Multi-view v2 - L3 (northeast)
v3 - L9 (northwest)
Head-mounted Lantern v1 - L3 (west)
v2 - L5 (across force bridge in Flight Bay 4)
v3 - L8 (center & southeast) (2 of 'em)
Energy/proj. Shield v1 - L2 (Delta quadrant, in radiactive storage)
v2 - L5 (west, through crawlway past repulsor lifts)
v3 - L7 (east)
v4 - L9 (north edge)
Infrared Night Sight v1 - L6 (Delta Grove lobby)
Nav. and Mapping Unit v1 - L1 (your closet)
v2 - L3 (east)
v3 - G2 (southwest edge)
Multimedia Data Reader v1 - L1 (your closet)
Turbo Motion Booster v1 - L1 (north edge, in radioactive storage room)
v2 - L4 (central)
Jump Jet Boots v1 - L4 (southwest)
v2 - G2 (northeast)
v3 - L7 (west)
Target Identifier v1 - L2 (Library)
v2 - L4 (north edge & west) (2 of 'em)
v3 - L6 (northwest)
v4 - G1 (southwest, behind shrub)
Environmental Suit v1 - L4 (southeast - past door with keypad access)
v2 - L3 (southeast, in Abe Ghiran's office)
v3 - L7 (east edge, under clothing, hard to see)
headlamp... nightvision... health monitor... mapping tool... enviro suit...
System Shock 2's upgrades were all about "I've figured out how to use this calcified alien turd! Just swing it like a wrench!" Or maybe OOH! You come across one of the super rare OS upgrades that unlock abilities like 4 EXTRA INVENTORY SLOTS! or SWING THE WRENCH WITH AN OVERHAND GRIP!! OH JESUS, OR 25% OFF VENDING MACHINE PRICES!!! OH GOD I CAME RIGHT THROUGH MY MONITOR!!!
In light of the list above, I'm pretty comfortable with just telling you to kiss my balls at this point. |
