There's some sorta Romulan expansion coming out in May and I would really love to have a D'Deridex class Warbird. What are the chances that my patience can outlast this game's issues? Alternately just tell me which parts to avoid.

They have improved the game a great deal from launch. Space combat is a blast to play, and much easier than the ground stuff, which is still kind of ass. Leveling is painfully easy, to the point that my first main character rattled from 0 to cap in less than two weeks without me even trying. Some people can do it in a few days (but they're kind of crazy). Even doing the story line missions with random open mission fights (fleet actions) should get an average player to level 50 (cap) before the story line missions are halfway through. Some of the missions are interesting, most really aren't. The first "featured episode" sequence (where you travel back in time) happens early enough that your patience should last at least long enough to discuss alcohol with Scotty (no, I'm not joking). You'll notice the game quality go up whenever you hit the featured episode stuff, while the normal mission stuff is kind of boring, disconnected and random.

A lot of the game has moved toward a much stronger grind than it used to be. The rewards are generally worth it, but it's a long grind to get them. The ships generally aren't part of the grind, though, just equipment and weapons, so you'll get your D'Deridex. Much the of the grind doesn't appear until you hit 50 anyway, so you won't notice. They haven't said, but it's likely the D'Deridex will be a level 40 ship (last free ship you can get), so you probably won't even have to hit cap to fly it.

Of course, the Romulan faction isn't a complete faction compared to the Klingons and Feds. There is ONLY Romulans and unlockable Remans for the faction (quasi-aliens are only available to gold/lifetime members, which is pay, pay, pay). At some point, a Romulan player will get to choose to ally with either the Feds or Klinks, getting access to the respective sides ships and exclusive equipment. It makes sense from a story perspective, but it pisses some people off.

It helps to get into a fleet and run missions with other people, especially the really grindy ones at end game. Otherwise those end game missions will through you in with random players, which could be good, or could be utterly miserable. PvP has exactly one good place to do it, but without any help, you will get destroyed in most fights (matches are generally awful and typically one sided). At least not everyone is a complete ass (and you can ignore the ones that are).

Give it a go at least for a bit. The Romulan stuff will be almost completely new, so if you start then, I suspect the quality will be better than the Fed and Klink stuff early on. Everyone will be as much in the dark as you are by then.
