If you want to spend a few hours in another Wadjet Eye identity-fuckery game, pick up Primordium. It'll deliver the story of a confused and frustrated robot into your eager orifices, albeit with the occasional minor frustration for your dumb player ass because you can't grasp the glory that is Wadjet Eye puzzle design. Maybe that was just me. Maybe I should stop watching television.
Have some categories.
WRITING:
The plot's another after the end deal featuring robots, which we've seen a good few of. The various elements have been executed well enough not to herniate your enjoyment, you picky little timewaster. Anyone who's played Gemini Rue won't be entirely surprised, but it's certainly a novel take on previous ideas - does make you wonder if they're a one-trick pony, but that's not always a terrible thing for short games.
The writing shines quite a bit when it comes to establishing setting, really. I don't think I found a single line of dialogue or written material jarring. Characters can be a tad annoying at times, but happily don't hang around long enough for their oddball behavior to turn into repetitive and grating bullshit.
The puzzles weren't too vexing. There were places I didn't exactly understand what the game wanted from me, but in retrospect these were relatively few.
GAMEPLAY:
It's a point and click adventure game, so there's only one relevant question: were there annoying sequences of any variety? Happily, there were none. The shooting some clapstro denizens chafed at in Rue is gone, and there is no comparable element to drain your Preparation H supplies. Saving is possible basically anytime, and there are very few unskippable sequences - usually you can fast-forward through dialogue with a click. There are a couple of logic problems and Q&A challenges, but no real penalty for trying them twice. It all could've been a whole lot worse, as far as adventure games go.
VISUAL:
Looks about the same as Gemini Rue, will draw the same gripes from those that protested about wasting their massive behemoth monitors. You lot can all use google so I'm delivered from the need to post screenshots you'll see anyway. If you're curious about mood and ambiance and all that visual art shit, I found that the efforts taken in this game were greater than in Rue, and managed to remind me of Beneath a Steel Sky without looking incredibly crude. Retro-style graphics abound, so for those of you that feel this is a cardinal sin: avail yourselves of a pulpit and start grousing.
AUDIO:
I'm the wrong person to ask about this, my hearing is so goddamn impaired. I recall a few grating sound effects and otherwise good music, though.
FUCKUPS AND BUGS:
Maaaaybe one in the whole game, but nothing crippling or game-breaking found so far. To their credit Wadjet Eye released a patch to fix some kind of game-freezing inventory bug that annoyed people.
What the fuck else do you need? Game length? I finished it in a couple hours max. |
