Civ 4 Colonization by fabio 04/14/2013, 3:24pm PDT
I read a lot of 5+ year old posts here wishing they made an update to Colonization. I can only assume that the vanilla version of the Civ 4 update was so broken that everyone skipped it.

I recently tried it and yes the base game is broken. First off games only last 300 turns which isn't nearly enough time to do anything. War against other nations? Native genocide? Manifest destiny? Forget all of it.

Second is the scaling. In order to revolt you need to have 50% rebel support from your population, so the number of liberty bells you need to produce goes up with your population. No big but then the army that the king sends over also keeps pace with the number of bells you produce. This means there's absolutely no reason to grow at all since the king's army will always keep up or even outpace you. By far the best strategy is to keep your starting city at size 1, grab the goody huts, buy as many military units as you can with the money then revolt. You now have an army that will crush the king's force. Congratulations you've won in 30 turns.

Thankfully a mod was released to fix this: The Authentic Colonization mod.

The biggest changes are the turn limit being removed and the king's army starting being frozen at a huge size so it becomes a race against the other countries to be able to beat it. Natives and other countries are now more aggressive so wars are a useful tool to eliminate them. Market prices are fixed (they crashed way too easily before, tools & horses were insanely cheap to buy instead of produce). They get a little carried away with some unneeded feature creep but it's nothing major.

The mod fixes things to make it a pretty addictive strategy game. I couldn't get that into Warlock but I've sunk a couple dozen hours into this. My only nitpick with the final product is that too much of the focus is placed on shuffling around your specialists instead of other Civ stuff; in fact I'd say it's over half the game.

Worth a download at least.
