I see you're as deluded as usual, Paul. That's good! Good for a chuckle. So how's the new cooking video with your fancy new infomercial cookware coming along? I'm looking forward to it.
I'm picking up some extra video to include in it. I can't really make videos at night, it's too dark here and I have to do video during daylight hours. I've found that because of the compact fluorescent (CF) bulbs we have here, the landlord doesn't have enough in the right places and he uses 60-watt incandescent equivalent, plus I don't really have a good way to add light, I can't get enough light at night. If you saw how dark the "slop" video was, and how grainy parts of it were, well, you're looking at a well-lit kitchen, at night, and discovering, as I did from my video from 2008, that the one thing cameras want lots of, is light , and as you get a bigger area, the amount of light you need increases, and it's more like exponentially than linearly, meaning lighting a space twice as big takes not twice the amount of light (measured in lumens), but 8 times the lumens.
I say "lumens" not "watts" (as I did in the video below) because now it's confusing with old incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescents and LED bulbs. 100 Watts Incandescent is 1600 lumens, and uses the equivalent of a 26 watt CF, or about 16 watts LED. Difference is a 100 watt incandescent is about 25c (and are being discontinued), a 26 watt CF is about $1.50 and will last ten times as long, and a 16-watt LED is a whopping $72.95 - that is not a misprint, I do mean seventy-three dollars - and lasts about 5 times as long as the CF. I have a desk lamp, and it has a 26 watt CF in it because there's no point going with less than a 100-watt Incandescent equivalent. For me to see adequately in an ordinary room I need the equivalent of at least 1600 lumens. At that, I can read, see without squinting, it's as bright as full daylight.
And the video camera seems to agree. I can get by on a wall-socket night light, which is probably a 4 watt bulb, so maybe that's 16 watts-equivalent of incandescent, it's enough in a dark room to get by, because your eyes adjust, and it's enough to find things, get in and get out. To a camera, that's probably all but pitch black. But the camera agrees with me, in a 10x10 or so room, 1600 lumens at about 2700K produces a good white light, not harsh or glaring.
LED lights would be great, they'll run even cheaper than CF, they last 5 times as long, they're fairly durable and have no mercury. But the goddamned capital cost makes them unaffordable. For commercial environments that use a lot of bulbs it's a no-brainer, if you went to CFLs, start trying where you can to put in LED bulbs instead, especially in applications that run light 24/7 over long periods like the primary support light for an office that always stays on even when all other lights are turned off at the switch when everyone goes home, and lights in staircases. Unfortunately nobody is in the staircase 99.9% of the time but you still have to keep them lighted, over several years the reduced electricity cost of LED will pay for the up-front capital cost for switching to LED. For residential users CF does make sense, you do need to know that a bulb being broken has to be treated like a hazmat incident: get out of the area and let the dust die down so the mercury can dissipate without you breathing it in.
Here's a real simple example of light difference just for a webcam at 2 feet:
