Jerry Whorebach wrote:
Unbreakable is arguably the best superhero movie ever made. It's certainly better than anything that stops the action for twenty minutes while little CGI men the size of houseflies flit weightlessly about the middle third of my TV, speakers thrashing and crackling with a constant buzz of shrieking metal and Whedonesque quips, all in an effort to convince me how goddamn excited I ought to be.
I only saw Signs once, but I liked that one, too. This might be a personal problem: I was crazy about UFOs as a kid, and Signs reminded me of those cheesy "documentaries" I used to devour Sunday mornings on cable (In Search Of... The Hopkinsville Goblins, or something like that). I think, had I seen it when I was nine instead of nineteen, I would still remember it fondly to this day.
I also liked Signs. Look, it's a fine movie. I like it in part because I also have a goofy younger brother that is good at baseball, and because it was the last role Mel Gibson had before he got weird. It has a bad reputation because a lot of people on the Internet desperately want other people to know how smart they are. In Internet Person's mind, aliens (that could actually BE alien in motive to humans) must have 100% logical reasons for doing what they do. They can't make bad decisions or be a semi-mindless force of nature or whatever else. Read any negative review of Signs and you can point out exactly when the Failed Romero syndrome kicks in, where the reviewer honestly thinks he could do a better job than M. Night. It's a movie about what happens to one particular family, but unlike Kramer vs Kramer, it's a sort of tragedy that people would actually give a shit about.
Unbreakable is also great.
