This is beating a dead horse for me, but you're a newbie by Mischief Maker 05/31/2013, 3:08pm PDT The game that originally got me into computer gaming big time was X-Wing, ever since a friend showed me a copy of the manual with that wireframe X-Wing fighter on the cover. "Wow! You can simulate flying the spaceships from Star Wars?!!" went my excited yet-to-be-jaded-by-the-prequels mind. I lacked a computer that could run it for a few years and just dreamed. Got to admit I didn't get very far in X-Wing when I finally got a (then) powerhouse computer that could do it justice. No matter, because I had the complete CD-Rom voice acted version of TIE Fighter, which is one of the high water marks in gaming history. I love the midi music that changed the imperial march to sound heroic. Flying a mission to rescue the Emperor with a fully voice acted Darth Vader as my wingman is to this day one of my high water marks in videogaming TIE Fighter is probably also the game that lead to my obsession and need to be disappointed by every "It's fun to be the bad guy" game that has come out since. FUCK YEAH! All that said, even the greatness of Tie Fighter was eclipsed by Freespace 2, an absolute work of virtuosity in the Space Sim genre. Meticulously crafted levels, GIGANTIC capital ships, beam and flak weaponry on said capitol ships to make them a zillion times scarier than any space sim capitol ship had ever been before (or since), Hollywood voice talent, Low-visibility nebula stages, great music. No wonder modders on the Freespace SCP project are still maintaining and tweaking the engine to this day. The only complaint I have about Freespace 2 is that, with the exception of the next-generation fighter craft, most of the new ship designs are less cool looking than their Freespace 1 counterparts. The Orion class destroyer is an absolute work of art, while the Hecate is just dark green and doesn't bring about the sense of hugeness of the Orion. Strike Suit Zero attempted to recreate the feel of Freespace 2 by throwing flak and beam weapons into the mix. Unfortunately its robot transforming gimmick stripped the capitol ships of any menace as you denude them of turrets in seconds with a giant missile swarm. The missions themselves weren't nearly as exciting as their Freespace 2 equivalents, and the game as a whole lacked a real visceral punch to everything. All the technological horsepower of a decade's advances but they can't help but make space feel like a tiny claustrophobic place. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game by itself. But its attempt to bring back the nostalgia of Freespace 2 fell flat on its face. Also storywise the ending pissed me off.
