I don't mind the PDAs really.
The logs could be a little shorter. A lot of them are dull, pointless, and poorly voice-acted. Then occasionally one will, at the very end of course, go like AND THAT'S WHY THE NEW BOX CODE IS 584. Okay. Remember when you picked up the yellow keycard and opened the yellow door? UPDATED FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM PAL.

I'll agree that the painfully obvious triggers get annoying in some parts, but they were annoying in Doom also. Picking up a backpack in I think the second or third level of Doom makes everything go black and has a bunch of monsters come out of little compartments and attack you. I could swear picking up keycards usually spawned more monsters on the way to the door you just got the card for.
Of all the intact gameplay elements from the original games, it's great that they chose this one (the worst). It's not scary, it's an immediate penalty for playing that part of the game for the first time. I have always saved frantically when I play any game, but FPS especially. Hooray, Doom 3 is a game that finally rewards me for my mincing baby-stepping gaming habits and umbilical reliance on reloads. In case anyone missed that: Doom3 forces you to reload constantly as a compromise for providing you with its cheap thrills. Truth be told, I can forgive it in some instances. I remember going to pick up some armor shards off the ground (oh, you will get hit in this game) and an imp came flying into my face behind a Monster Door(copyright 2004 id software). I flinched like a wimp (and reloaded). That was okay, but then of course monsters in Doom3 are too hard to kill with one shot (except zombies, which can go down with one shotgun head shot), so the imp hits me, there's no way to avoid it hitting me, and I have to take damage in order to pick up the armor shard, thus negating its usefulness. Such are the dilemmas that face you in this game. I take the hit, because the fucker will probably pop out and get me from behind shortly anyway, when another imp is hitting me from the front. Also, it takes too long to recock the shotgun; you will always get hit at least once if you don't take cover or take down the monster in one shot. And, the machine gun only shoot ten bullets before you have to reload it. If you are engaged by multiple enemies, you may as well run until you can get around a corner to give head shots.

Also gay: going to third-person for new monster intros and cut scenes. What's the point of this bad-ass engine and in-game graphics when you cut to barely-superior cutscene graphics? And oh, I love being taken into third-person for the first imp, then dumped back into first person to artificially make it more difficult to react. There is your Resident Evil comparison, bitew.

Even the levels end like Doom, with you in a little room with a switch, I do though miss the screen melting away and showing me the statistics for that level.
Those would be a welcome kitschy old-school nod. But secret areas are so barely secretive, you don't even get a sound effect and a text exclamation a la Half Life. Just obscurely-hidden ammo shards and ammo.
