It's like getting to talk in a crowd of people, many of whom have a higher chance of being interesting than your grandma or high school classmate or whomever is on your Facebook friends list. One thing Twitter gets that Facebook/Google+ don't is the issue with names. You don't have to use your real name as your username. It allows for celebrity brands or whatever and some fun novelty accounts. A lot of websites run by useless social media people advise using your real name as your handle this but unless you're famous, don't bother and just choose something short. The username and name section are different on Twitter for a reason. It would be nice if Twitter released some of the usernames that have been dormant for years, but they've been promising to do that since 2011.
