at what point do you start rooting for the kickstarter scammers? by Com Thick 07/05/2013, 2:00pm PDT
What would be an investor's reasonable reaction to this?

Not George Broussard wrote:

Schafer claims that he took a look at his personal bank account last week and found 2.5 million dollars just missing from it. We reached out for a comment from him on how this could have happened.

“I was out getting some personal things when my debit card was declined,” wrote Schafer, “I joked with the cashier saying that was impossible because I had three million dollars in there. Turns out, I don’t have three million dollars in there anymore. It just disappeared. I would have called the police, but I don’t think this was a theft.”

“In fact, I think it was just silly old me misplacing some money as usual,” admitted Schafer, “I know people entrusted me with their money to make Broken Age and we’re still going to do that. We just need a little more money is all. And I know that we just finished our Massive Chalice Kickstarter as well. In fact, I had set the goal even higher for that project because I knew I would probably misplace half of that money as well.”

When we pointed out that even if 2.5 million dollars went missing, he still had enough for the 400,000 dollars originally asked for, Schafer responded, “I can’t go back to my original design plan for this game. People expect a lot out of this point-and-click adventure and these expectations need to be met with a lot more money.

We spoke to a few of the Double Fine backers for their take on this story.

“It’s okay he lost a little bit of our money,” said backer Sarah Carlisle, “I misplace money all the time because I’m such a doofus. What I think this really proves is that we’re all human, even game designers.”

“I think critics will be silenced when he presents the revolutionary point-and-click adventure game that will shake the industry to its core,” said backer NIKKadventure_75, “It has to be revolutionary because of all the money put into it.”

Schafer wrote:

There’s no way in hell I’m going to let these people down a second time. Or a third time.”

Schafer has already started a Kickstarter for Broken Age 2 saying, “I know Broken Age and Massive Chalice aren’t out yet, but I figure I should get the money now so I don’t have to worry about it later.”
