Even if it did qualify, Bubble Bobble would never make my top ten list of anything except Yummiest Bonus Items. This is because the incredibly byzantine scoring system makes high-level Bubble Bobble play indistinguishable from high-level obsessive-compulsive disorder. Crucial fruits and iced creams appearing or not based on the time remaining on the clock when you finished the last round, or the digits in your score when you pop your bubbles? Fuck off, guy who invented Bubble Bobble. Fuck off, Fukio Mitsuji!
Oh shit, I just found out the guy who invented Bubble Bobble is dead. Well now don't I feel like an asshole.
Also making me feel like an asshole: the fact that I screwed up the Sonic 2 entry by referring to Emerald Hill Zone as "Green Hill Zone". And then screwed it up again by forgetting to explain why Sonic 2 is my favourite of the Genesis Sonic games. It's because I was one of those impressionable '90s kids who bought into the marketing hype that Sonic was all about GOING FAST and NOT GIVING A SHIT, and Sonic 2 has the most stages that cater to my preferred playstyle of holding right while smiling. In fact, with its emphasis on visually impressive, virtually non-interactive set pieces like loop-the-loops and speed pipes, you can almost tell Sonic 2 was Made in America. And the inclusion of Tails - a second controllable character who could neither die nor himself cause the screen to scroll, thereby never putting you in danger - was a sweetly genius innovation that anyone with a much younger sibling should be able to appreciate. Just thinking about that made my coal black heart grow three sizes too large ♥ |
