I don't mind the PDAs really.
The logs could be a little shorter. A lot of them are dull, pointless, and poorly voice-acted. Then occasionally one will, at the very end of course, go like AND THAT'S WHY THE NEW BOX CODE IS 584. Okay. Remember when you picked up the yellow keycard and opened the yellow door? UPDATED FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM PAL.

Yeah, I got a big ol' fucking kick out of the one e-mail "This girl is dying so forward this to everyone you know." and the "Clone Sex the final taboo?" e-mails. Though the keycard equation is basically it, I even noticed the one box before the monorail gives you two PDAs with the code on it respectively the message sender, and the guy who replied to the message. One before you get to there, and another when you get turn around and go back by the box, just incase you missed it.

Of all the intact gameplay elements from the original games, it's great that they chose this one (the worst). It's not scary, it's an immediate penalty for playing that part of the game for the first time. I have always saved frantically when I play any game, but FPS especially. Hooray, Doom 3 is a game that finally rewards me for my mincing baby-stepping gaming habits and umbilical reliance on reloads. In case anyone missed that: Doom3 forces you to reload constantly as a compromise for providing you with its cheap thrills. Truth be told, I can forgive it in some instances. I remember going to pick up some armor shards off the ground (oh, you will get hit in this game) and an imp came flying into my face behind a Monster Door(copyright 2004 id software). I flinched like a wimp (and reloaded).

Yeah, on suggestion of some dreg here, I started playing the game on veteran. I feel my F5 key may fall off. The health and armor items just don't feel spaced out well at all. I think that's where most of this stems from. Though I've gotten really good at blowing up enemies projectiles mid-flight (reverant rockets, caco demon bolts,) and at dodging the imps fireball due to it's parabolic curve.

That was okay, but then of course monsters in Doom3 are too hard to kill with one shot (except zombies, which can go down with one shotgun head shot),

The shotgun is abnormally strong. You can do an imp with one close shot, a demon robot dog with two, a Reverant with two, it's got like the close range damage equivilant of half a grenade(which works for all things on the ground if you don't mind taking damage), which is pretty absurd. Playing through the game it feels much like Megaman; Imp/and all other melee crap's weakness is shotgun, Cacodemon's and Reverant's weakness is the Plasma Rifle(Which is pretty good for anything else but the skulls), Flaming Skulls are weak against the Minigun(Which is good for about anyone else), Machine Gun is pretty great against zombie marines, and flaming skulls, it can work in a pinch against anything but Reverants (unless you're great at blowing up his missiles the second they launch), The Missile Launcher seems like it's best use is for bosses and grenades are good for anyone who doesn't run up to you.

so the imp hits me, there's no way to avoid it hitting me, and I have to take damage in order to pick up the armor shard, thus negating its usefulness. Such are the dilemmas that face you in this game. I take the hit, because the fucker will probably pop out and get me from behind shortly anyway, when another imp is hitting me from the front. Also, it takes too long to recock the shotgun; you will always get hit at least once if you don't take cover or take down the monster in one shot. And, the machine gun only shoot ten bullets before you have to reload it. If you are engaged by multiple enemies, you may as well run until you can get around a corner to give head shots.

Yeah, that gets better with the Plasma Gun and Minigun, which I realize is a pretty queer cop out.

Also gay: going to third-person for new monster intros and cut scenes. What's the point of this bad-ass engine and in-game graphics when you cut to barely-superior cutscene graphics? And oh, I love being taken into third-person for the first imp, then dumped back into first person to artificially make it more difficult to react. There is your Resident Evil comparison, bitew.

Yeah, some are horribly disorienting. I'd rather they just happen with me in first person view.

Those would be a welcome kitschy old-school nod. But secret areas are so barely secretive, you don't even get a sound effect and a text exclamation a la Half Life. Just obscurely-hidden ammo shards and ammo.

Yeah, you can usually tell a secret area when shit pops out the second you get the crap from it. Lack of stuff like the soul globes and a regular amount of besserker packs that aren't simply in an area as part of a sequence, so we can remember how cool they were in Doom does hurt the game. Also, the change in the monster designs work really well for somethings, and just blow for others.

I just am getting a kick out of the game. It could have been better, but what couldn't? Even though I'm quick loading like a faggot the battle still feel frantic and fun, especially when they are throwing loads of stuff at you. If the various difficulties provided some differences as to encourage people to play them in sequence I think it would be a totally different game.
