The problem with the statement that DmC is "Devil May Cry for the rest of us!" is that there were already hundreds of copycats for "the rest of us." God of War, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Dante's Inferno, etc, were all shallow pretty games that looked like DMC games, but had little to offer in the way of advanced gameplay. Devil May Cry 3 was a gold standard for over-the-top brawler excellence that many other games tried and failed to copy.
The outrage over DmC is not only that this game fails to live up to that standard of quality, but if a more casual game titled "Devil May Cry" sells great, they likely won't bother with that standard ever again. DMC4 will be as good as it gets.
Here's an advanced player's review of DmC:
If you like the visuals and are just interested in hearing the story and reaching the end credits you could certainly do worse. If you want a combat system you can really sink your teeth into, Devil May Cry 4 sells for $20.
