It reminded me of Citadel, in that they both start out looking like pretty normal high-quality movies about real people with psychological issues in the first act, then get a bit weird in the second, then descend into complete awesome horror movie stupidity for the third. Most big-budget horror movies these days seem like they need to have something "scary" happen every reel, which just ends up turning them into mush, so it's nice to find a throwback to the '70s style.
Do you know how these get made? Are they cheaper than they look because of ~digital technology~, are there a whole lot of unemployed filmmakers in the UK willing to work for peanuts, does the government just like handing out money with no oversight? British genre films today remind me of Canadian genre films from 30-35 years ago, and that's fucking great. |
