In case you were like me and too young and dumb and white to understand the value of Soul Train at the time.

Speak for yourself, LostMyMittens, I used to watch Soul Train every weekend, my brother would put it on, and we're white. I was probably around 10-16 during those years when Don Cornelius would wish us "Peace, love, and souuuuuul!"

In fact, we used to watch to see when the token white would show up. One of the regular dancers on the show was a white female, just so they couldn't be accused of being racially biased. And of course, almost all of the guest singers would be black except that, on occasion they'd get someone like, of all people, Elton John to show up.

I posted a mention on TV Tropes about it, ("Specifically suspicious denial," you can find it here) my brother happened to mention to me he'd heard rumors that Don Cornelius had died of a drug overdose. Sure, enough, wouldn't you know it, that very episode, Don Cornelius comes on to announce that he has not died of a drug overdose and that his lawyers were looking for the persons who were slandering his good name.

I realize how precocious I was back then, even though I was just a kid or a teenager, I spotted it immediately. I said, "Notice, in all his comments, he never said that he didn't use drugs, he simply said that he had not died of a drug overdose." What he said was done with very slick phrasing, in which everything he said was true - obviously, he can't be dead if he made an announcement - and that falsely saying he died of an overdose is slander, even if he's using drugs, saying he died when he didn't is still slander, and he didn't make any denials of drug use in case he is (I have no care one way or the other, this was the 1970s, people used cocaine and possibly other drugs so much back then I'd be surprised if there was a rich guy who didn't try it at least once; even Kirk Douglas admitted in his autobiography that he tried cocaine once but it didn't do anything for him.) So while I'm not claiming or even trying to imply that Don Cornelius was using illegal drugs (I have no knowledge either way), what was interesting was his denial that he died of a drug overdose only said he wasn't dead, he never really said that he did not use them.

So the point remains that there were white guys who watched Soul Train back in the 1970s, because my brother and I were two of them. And I'm sure there were lots more.
