It pains me to say this because I really like the GTA games.
There's just not much to do in-between missions. Are there even collectibles to find in GTA5? There must be, right? I've even resorted to calling people on the phone just for an excuse to dick around in the world outside of missions.
There's racing minigames, but racing is about the worst minigame allowable. I did run into a couple scripted events with NPCs where you see an NPC in peril and you get to help them out, but only two times. I was so desperate to explore the world that I even tried the tennis minigame (spoiler: it's wii-tennis level BULL. SHIT. with excruciating loading times). I went to the shooting range, which unlocks a couple guns but it's tedious as all hell. There are a few question mark missions, I've probably done about five of those. It's a nice diversion but there's just not enough of them.
The problem is that I've played Saint's Row 3, which is JAM-PACKED with exciting mini-games to do in-between missions. Nearly every city block has a fucking Indestructible Comet Pyro Challenge or Attack Chopper Battle or Insurance Scam or Rampage or Tank Battle or Genki Challenge or something fun to do. That's in addition to gang territory battles that are fun as fuck! GTA5, in contrast, has miles and miles of empty space populated by buildings. It's beautiful but empty.
I think Rockstar didn't include all the goofy SR3 shit because they are trying to be more realistic, but that's completely undermined when I can still smash into cars and people and throw molotovs with very little consequence (escape the cops or respawn at hospital). Rockstar has made an open-world game where the world is a desert containing one glowing marker where your next mission begins. In effect, it's exactly the same as a non-sandbox game like Max Payne. San Andreas had at least FIVE different kinds of collectibles, plus car hunts, plus vehicle schools, plus territory wars, plus demolition derbies, and more. How the fuck can GTA4 and GTA5 be so empty by comparison?
Well, it's a little saddening but at least the world is beautiful and maybe there's hope that at some point the empty desert will start to have more things to do. Am I safe to assume that more shit opens up later? Or should I begin the grieving process?
